Re: [gopher] History and future of "the gopher project"

Yes, it is, but GMANE is just a mail to nntp translator, without any relation to *the* gopher newsgroup (ie. comp.infosystems.gopher).

Currently we have two communities:
 - historical comp.infosystems.gopher (very small)
 - this mailing list (much bigger)

I'm wondering whether it would be possible to unite these two worlds... Even if most people on comp.infosystems.gopher are also in this mailing list, there's no reason to artificially split an already quite fragmented community...

Out of curiosity - who does follow comp.infosystems.gopher here? I am pretty sure I am not the only one, but I might just as well be wrong on this.

About this - why are we all using this mailing list in the first place?
There have been a dedicated nntp group for gopher since forever:
comp.infosystems.gopher but surprisingly, this mailing list is much more
active.

Me personally, I am not a huge fan of mailing lists, and I prefer
newsgroups, seeing them as a much more efficient and superior
communication tool than forwarding mails to xxxxxx people around the world.

So why do people use mailing lists (and the gopher mailing list in
particular), instead of NNTP? Is it because it's more convenient for
some to use a mailing list than it is to configure a nntp client? (note,
that Thunderbird does both very well).

If that's the reason, then maybe we could imagine having some kind of
gateway that would duplicate content from this mailing list to
comp.infosystems.gopher, and vice-versa, so everyone could use what he
likes most? Or, a step even further, replace this list with a mail
gateway to comp.infosystems.gopher ?

These are just loose ideas, and real questions. I'd be curious to know
what other people think about this. In case there would be some room for
uniting the mailing list with NNTP, I would definitely be willing to
provide some time, work and resources for it.

This mailing list seems to be already available through gmane:

nntp://news.gmane.org/gmane.network.gopher.general

For example, here is your message:
