Well, your ISP certainly do have a mail server, but you're using another server anyway. So why not using any other NNTP server? It doesn't have to be owned by your ISP... ;-)
Just as an example, Teranews is proposing some free accounts on their NNTP server... (but I'm sure there are more free NNTP servers out there).
