I'd love to provide a patch but I am not able. That is usually tried in experimental… transition tracking is e.g. auto-bootstrapped here. But there is nothing apt can do about it as we are not a direct (reverse-)dependency. That isn't the problem here through: Accidentally a libunistring2 package was shipped which did not contain the library. So apt, thinking an update for libunistring2 were available installed it and after that wasn't usable anymore as it did not contain what it was supposed to. That was bug #1025901, reported and fixed last year already. The old (buggy) empty libunistring2 package remained in experimental through. Usually ftpmasters clean up such packages ("cruft" in Debian lingo), but for some reason that didn't happen. Based on your report here the ftpmasters were pinged on IRC and looking at experimental now it seems like the package was indeed cleaned up from there. So, the moral of the story is: Be careful with experimental. Use it only if you want to participate in specific experiments. Don't update to it installing all experiments at once. Not only does it make hard to track down why something broke (and something certainly will), but you will also run into issues nobody else has (as seen by having this critical remain for close to 3 months unnoticed).
