Package: apt Version: 0.6.43.2 Severity: wishlist Many people have personal Debian archive setup. It would be nice if the entries in sources.list need not always be edited before using apt. SUGGESTION Add new option (that can be used multiple times), to temporarily add new URLs in addition to those in sources.list. The option could be repeated multiple times to add more to the "current set of sources during operation" apt-get --url="http://.. unstable main" [--url=...] <command> -- Package-specific info: -- (no /etc/apt/preferences present) -- -- (/etc/apt/sources.list present, but not submitted) -- -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Kernel: Linux 2.6.14-2-686 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=ISO-8859-1) (ignored: LC_ALL set to en_US) Versions of packages apt depends on: ii libc6 2.3.5-13 GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libgcc1 1:4.0.2-9 GCC support library ii libstdc++6 4.0.2-9 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 Versions of packages apt recommends: pn debian-archive-keyring <none> (no description available) -- no debconf information

That said, I consider this bugreport done anyhow as with >= 1.1 apt gained support for installing deb packages via *.deb and *.changes files and with 1.3 we have an --with-source option adding a source of metadata for a given command only, so that you can use beside the mentioned files also Packages and Sources files (and a few more things). So that can work mostly as requested – depending a bit on what was the underlying usecase of the request. So, instead of keeping this ten year old bug open forever, I am closing it as done with the idea that we have the best we could do – if not, we can always look into further additions via new bugreports.
