Dear Maintainer,

aptitude upgrade packagename will only upgrade the package and its dependencies
but not everything.
Same for apt-get.

However apt upgrade packagename is the same as apt upgrade.

If you don't want to replicate the behaviour of the other tools, at least
give an error instead of silently ignoring parameters.

No, it is not - upgrade accepts a normal "install" commandline:

 apt upgrade pkg
Upgrade the system, and install pkg (or make sure it remains installed)
 apt upgrade pkg-
Upgrade the system, but remove pkg/make sure pkg is not installed
 apt upgrade pkg/release
Upgrade the system and make sure pkg from the suite/codename release
  is installed afterwards.

and so on.
