Such a function exists… I also run apt (in fact basically everything) in screen or nowadays tmux for years and have never seen this problem, so I wonder how it possible that you see this… Could a problem with your terminal, or terminal + screen, or … too many variables for a four year old bug without further comments or other reports to splice in. I am therefore closing this as unreproducible with a hint of hope that this is fixed in the meantime, but if this is still reproducible for you feel free to reopen!
