Package: apt Version: 0.6.43 Severity: normal If I try to re-install scim-m17n (deleted by apt to fix other scim problems), apt complains that it has unmet dependencies, but the list of dependencies does not make any sense: It claims that scim >= 1.0.1 is not going to be installed, but scim 1.4.1 (obviously > 1.0.1) is already installed. $ LANG=C sudo apt-get install scim-m17n Password: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that the package is simply not installable and a bug report against that package should be filed. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: scim-m17n: Depends: scim (>= 1.0.1) but it is not going to be installed E: Broken packages $ dpkg -l|grep scim ii libscim8 1.4.1-1 library for SCIM platform ii mlterm-im-scim 2.9.2-5 MultiLingual TERMinal, scim input method plu ii scim 1.4.1-1 Smart Common Input Method platform rc scim-config-gconf 1.0.2-3 GConf configure module for SCIM ii scim-gtk2-immodule 1.4.1-1 GTK2 IMModule with SCIM as backend ii scim-modules-socket 1.4.1-1 socket modules for SCIM ii scim-modules-table 0.5.4-1 generic tables IM engine module for SCIM ii scim-pinyin 0.5.0-1 Smart pinyin IM engine module for SCIM ii scim-tables-additional 0.5.4-1 SCIM Input Method table data for additional ii scim-tables-zh 0.5.4-1 SCIM Chinese Input Method table data (WuBi, $ -- Package-specific info: -- apt-config dump -- APT ""; APT::Architecture "i386"; APT::Build-Essential ""; APT::Build-Essential:: "build-essential"; APT::Cache-Limit "16777216"; Dir "/"; Dir::State "var/lib/apt/"; Dir::State::lists "lists/"; Dir::State::cdroms "cdroms.list"; Dir::State::userstatus "status.user"; Dir::State::status "/var/lib/dpkg/status"; Dir::Cache "var/cache/apt/"; Dir::Cache::archives "archives/"; Dir::Cache::srcpkgcache "srcpkgcache.bin"; Dir::Cache::pkgcache "pkgcache.bin"; Dir::Etc "etc/apt/"; Dir::Etc::sourcelist "sources.list"; Dir::Etc::sourceparts "sources.list.d"; Dir::Etc::vendorlist "vendors.list"; Dir::Etc::vendorparts "vendors.list.d"; Dir::Etc::main "apt.conf"; Dir::Etc::parts "apt.conf.d"; Dir::Etc::preferences "preferences"; Dir::Bin ""; Dir::Bin::methods "/usr/lib/apt/methods"; Dir::Bin::dpkg "/usr/bin/dpkg"; DPkg ""; DPkg::Pre-Install-Pkgs ""; DPkg::Pre-Install-Pkgs:: "/usr/sbin/dpkg-preconfigure --apt || true"; Acquire ""; Acquire::http ""; Acquire::http::Proxy "http://proxy:3128"; -- (no /etc/apt/preferences present) -- -- /etc/apt/sources.list -- ##deb http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US unstable/non-US main contrib non-free ##deb-src http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US unstable/non-US main contrib non-free #deb http://mirrors.kernel.org/debian/ unstable main non-free contrib #deb-src http://mirrors.kernel.org/debian/ unstable main non-free contrib deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ unstable main non-free contrib deb-src http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ unstable main non-free contrib #deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ unstable main non-free contrib #deb-src http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ unstable main non-free contrib deb http://security.debian.org/ stable/updates main contrib non-free # scim-anthy deb http://everybody.good-day.net/~ikuya/debian/sarge/scim-misc/ ./ deb http://everybody.good-day.net/~ikuya/debian/sarge/anthy-ss/ ./ -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.4.28-ow1 Locale: LANG=zh_TW.Big5, LC_CTYPE=zh_TW.Big5 (charmap=BIG5) Versions of packages apt depends on: ii libc6 2.3.5-8.1 GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libgcc1 1:4.0.2-5 GCC support library ii libstdc++6 4.0.2-5 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 apt recommends no packages. -- no debconf information

What this means is that thanks to a dependency problem (Conflicts maybe?) scim will be removed from your system (hence scim >= 1.0.1 isn't satisified anymore). The message has changed in the last 10 years which should make this a bit more clear, but in the end this isn't a bug but a user support question which should have been sent to a user-support mailinglist.
