Package: apt
Version: 0.6.43
Severity: wishlist

When using apt-key add, the help and manpage tell to provide a public key from
a file without rendering any information how to use gpg to extract it from the
keyserver. As the key-id is available from apt-get anyway, permitting the user
to ask apt-key to retrieve this key from a nearby keyserver directly and
prompting with fingerprint to add this would be much more convenient.

I agree.

The first mentioning of "apt-key adv" was in the changelog entry for
0.7.16:

  * Document apt-key finger and adv commands
(thanks to Stefan Schmidt, closes: #350575)

Looking at #350575, the patch to just add the documentation for
something which is already there, was against apt 0.6.43.1. So we can
assume that this feature was already present in at least 0.6.43.1.

Actually I suspect that the requested feature was already present in
the reported version 0.6.43. The only thing which was missing was the
documentation and hence it stayed undiscovered and wanted. :-)

I'm closing this bug report accordingly.

Feel free to reopen this bug report if you think that this must be
a functionality of the "apt-key add" subcommand instead of the
"apt-key adv" subcommand.
