I'm not an apt developer but you will find tons of things to work at in the
bugtracker:

Find some bugs, see which ones you find interesting and help to solve them by
either providing more information on them or a patch that fixes them.
As a new contributor you might especially be interested in bugs that have the
gift tag [1]. Apt maintainers will mark bugs as "gift" if they are especially
suitable for new contributors:
