Hi David I'm getting the same issue as reported by Tom, running Jessie since an update / upgrade / dist-upgrade cycle this morning. Have tried the dist-upgrade using backed up dpkg.status files as you suggested but looks like none of them are old enough. Would sending you a compressed /var/lib/dpkg/status file help ?
