Package: libapt-pkg4.12Version: 0.9.7.8Severity: normal
Hi,
I am upgrading from squeeze to wheezy
- 'apt-get upgrade' runs through OK
- 'apt-get -s dist-upgrade' then shows this error:
Conf libapt-pkg4.12:amd64 broken
Breaks:apt:amd64
[]
- this is the only error, some 350 other packages are reported without errors
I stopped here, don't dare to proceed

Simulation isn't 100% accurate compared to the real deal simple because if run in reality APT will call dpkg multiple times to do the heavy lifting while in simulation APT does not call dpkg (as we can't) but calculates on its own, which isn't (can't be and shouldn't be) an exact reimplementation of what dpkg would do. Hence, you have to read it with a bit of salt added. In this specific case, the error is absolutely right: libapt-pkg4.12 breaks apt, which will cause a (temporary) deconfiguration of apt. Its fine though as apt keeps working in that case as the breaks is wrong - at least a bit: The squeeze version of apt doesn't use libapt-pkg4.12, so it will proceed working uninterrupted (and even if your computer crashes, apt can pick up the pieces - which this error is hinting at: as this might be a place in which a crash could be fatal) so the dependency is wrong, but there is no way of expressing that this version of libapt-pkg4.12 breaks only a limited set of old apt versions. So in summary: if that is your only concern, go ahead, you will be fine. (I am therefore closing this bugreport) Good luck with your upgrade and have fun with wheezy :) David Kalnischkies
