They're a side-effect of doing a CD-only install of squeeze (i.e. not
selecting a network mirror) and selecting to install volatile (now
squeeze-updates).  I'm trying to see if we can make things a little
better for the first point release.

(yes, they're broken; that's why they get commented out, the intention
isn't simply that people uncomment them and expect them to work)

That won't work.  squeeze-updates is carried on standard mirrors, not by
volatile.d.o (which now only hosts lenny-volatile).  Something like:

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org squeeze-updates main contrib

would be required.
