Bug#602354: base: apt-get runs in top consuming 90% cpu. 0% idle. uptime 18:45.

Could you run
apt-get update
by hand as root, so we can see where apt hangs, please?


Attaching your sources.lists could be useful, too:
find /etc/apt -name '*.list' -exec cat {} \;

Specifically: Do you have a CD/DVD/USB-{stick,disk} as a source?
(I remember skipping over a similar sounding bug in report in launchpad…)
