Software Center got user rating/comments recently if i am not
completely wrong, so some data would be available…

Popularity could be a different thing: debian collects these information
already with the popularity-contest package (popcon in short).

Some frontends use these information - e.g. packagesearch i think.

The problem with this data is currently: They are typically out of sync with
the files APT downloads in the "apt-get update" step as this data has most
of the time his own tools and therefore their own update commands:
apt-file update for example.

Michael had some ideas for reworking the downloader a bit to enable frontends
to register other files for downloading but that is draft status currently…
Help is as always welcomed…


For games goplay can be interesting btw, as it displays screenshots
and so on. The go* series in general is targeted at specific packagegroups,
but could need a bit more love to be super-useful, i guess…
