Package: apt

Severity: normal
File: /usr/bin/apt-get
Dear Sir,
I have installed a server debiann with the minimum things : fileserver and a tiny X11 with little few apps.
So almost nothing, just file serving
I fidn out that dpkg -l gives gnome all the time
please find the output of telling that gnome still remains although removed fro the pc using apt-get remove
gnome is really causing bugs to my system and I would like to avoid any kinds of its pacakges to have a secured debian server (and I do not need X11 at all)

Hi!

If you look closely you will see that dpkg has them only in 'rc' state which
means: removed and only conf-files are still present, so they are not
really installed any more. In the APT version noted above which is intended
for squeeze will it be actually possible to purge also the conf-files with
the command you tried so dpkg will end up in 'un'.
Until then you can instruct dpkg directly to purge the package you
previously have only removed (not purged) with APT.
The command is "dpkg -p pkgname" - but beware,
dpkg will not ask if its okay to move on, it will just do it,
so don't purge the "wrong" packages…
btw: apt-get has support for regular expressions, so if you really want
to get right of all gnome named packages you could also try
apt-get purge .*gnome.*
Best regards
David Kalnischkies
