Actually, investigating the situation a bit more, there appears to be
a bug in apt.  base-files depends only on awk; although gawk is also
installed earlier, apt doesn't seem to realize that awk is provided by
gawk as well as mawk so that it's ok to remove mawk.

I can also no longer reproduce the error with

apt-get install gawk- mawk- original-awk -s

on my machine and the bug itself is open for
more than a year with this assumption.

I am therefore closing this bug now,
but feel free to reopen it if you disagree.
