I entirely agree this should be fixed. I'd prefer getting ACK from
other people who happen to work on APT maintenance (I do not consider
myself an APT maintainer even though I commit things from time to
time).

Your patch is simple enough, I think, even though it suffers from
potential outdateness when "lenny" will be an old story in 10
years...:-))...but it's much better than having "stable" that goes
against all recommended practice (and against what's done by the
installer, FWIW).
