While updating my pc today using the Smart Upgrade option of Update-manager, aptitude, synaptic, and update-manager were un-installed. apt was upgraded from 0.7.20.2 to 0.7.20.2+squeeze1 to fix a problem with updates, I don't think that this is going to help :-)

This should already be fixed by apt version 0.7.21 (and the
respective versions of its reverse dependencies) which recently
migrated to testing. So I'm closing this bug.
