Package: apt
Version: 0.7.14
Severity: normal

Now that bug 128818 has been dealt with, can we get an rsync like
method for packages themselves? For everyone outside the US,
bandwidth is still more important than CPU.  Bandwidth costs money;
cpu doesn't.

I'm thinking in particular of tracking sid, where bloated crap like
openoffice and firefox change every second day (with metadata-only
changes more often than not), necessitating the download of 100s of
megs of basically-unchanged packages (I place openoffice et al on
hold, but that's laborious when you do actually need to upgrade things
on many hosts).

To fix this bug, aptitude and apt-get would have to antipate the name
of the file to be next downloaded[1], grab the last version of that
file available[2] in the /var/cache/apt/archives cache[3],
hardlink/copy it over to the new name, and then run whatever
rsync/zsync etc algorithm is chosen to grab the new file.

Naturally, the packages would need to be generated with gzip
--rsyncable. Make it part of policy, and soon enough all packages
will be converted to the rsyncable format (certainly after the first
update of each package).

[1] Easy, since it's got to download it.

[2] Simple heuristic to work out the base, find all the matching files
in the cache with this base, find the most recent match based on
mtime, then run `dpkg --info` over the match to verify that you have
indeed found the right package. Or if that is not accurate and picks
up too many packages that aren't matching the one we are trying to
update, see whether there is a file in the cache matching the
currently installed version.

[3] And hell, apt-cacher should deal with this too, so lets make it a
library all of the apts can hook into.

Hello Tim.

I'm closing this bug due to following reasons:

1) alternative is already implemented - see debdelta package
2) deb's can be packed not only by gzip, but also by bzip2 or even lzma, which have not
--rsyncable or similar option.
