I had undertaken it as an interesting challenge, as APT's source was completely foreign to me, and at the time, had thought it was a good idea. It may be a matter of policy whether build-deps should be considered for auto-removal. At the time of my patch, I thought this was a *very* good idea, but given recent discussion, I'm not quite sure. I would still like to see *some* method available to remove packages installed by build-dep. There has been some recent discussion to this effect on this bug report in launchpad as well, as I cloned the bug report for Ubuntu. (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt/+bug/248268) The patch was enhanced to include the configuration setting APT::Get::Build-Dep-Automatic > Anyway, this patch won't go for Lenny, I expect we can choose something (this > patch or some other approach) for Squeeze.
