Package: apt-get Severity: important This is a fresh install of Etch, but installing packages is a pain. I've tried installing php5 and python, and I keep running into errors. The first problem was installing php5. Installation stopped with 'debconf-loadtemplate: command not found'. After 'apt-get remove' of php5, php5-cgi and apache-something, I was able to install 'debconf-utils', which provided debconf-loadtemplate. The second problem was installing python. Installation stopped with 'update-desktop-database: command not found'. Did the apt-get remove thing again, but it aborted, due to update-desktop-database not being found. Created symlink from /bin/true to /usr/bin/update-desktop-database and managed to remove things, then install desktop-file-utils. The third problem was installing php5 again. It got farther, but then choked on 'install-docs: command not found'. This is my first exposure to Debian. If I weren't being paid to do this work, I'd be switching back to Redhat right about now! -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-4-686 Locale: LANG=en_CA.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_CA.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8)

Thanks for this report. This was probably don't bug of apt, bug a bug(s) in some binary packages with missing dependencies. So I'm closing the bug. Reopen it if you encounter some similar with Lenny beta installs. -- Eugene V. Lyubimkin aka JackYFAttachment: signature.asc
