Package: apt Version: 0.6.41 Severity: important We are running Sid within a chroot environment and from time to time I update the packages there. Since about apt-0.6.40 the 'apt-get update command' causes problems. It just leaves zero byte files in /var/lib/apt/lists/partial/, e.g.: -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 2005-08-28 10:43 ftp.nerim.net_debian-marillat_dists_sarge_main_binary-i386_Packages -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 2005-09-14 21:47 ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de_pub_Mirrors_ftp.debian.org_debian_dists_experimental_main_binary-i386_Packages -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 2005-09-14 21:47 ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de_pub_Mirrors_ftp.debian.org_debian_dists_experimental_non-free_binary-i386_Packages -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 2005-09-14 21:47 ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de_pub_Mirrors_ftp.debian.org_debian_dists_stable_contrib_binary-i386_Packages During the next 'apt-get update' I'm getting many messages like below, and the package list won't be updated. Hit ftp://ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de unstable/contrib Sources 99% [Packages bzip2 0] [Query] [Logging in] bzip2: Compressed file ends unexpectedly; perhaps it is corrupted? *Possible* reason follows. bzip2: Inappropriate ioctl for device Input file = (stdin), output file = (stdout) It is possible that the compressed file(s) have become corrupted. You can use the -tvv option to test integrity of such files. You can use the `bzip2recover' program to attempt to recover data from undamaged sections of corrupted files. This bug can be very confusing as I first thought we are experiencing filesystem or even memory errors - until I found out about the files in /var/lib/apt/lists/partitial. Thanks, Bernd PS: Sorry that I reported not earlier, but my first bug report seems to have been lost due to a mail-agent misconfiguration in the chroot. -- Package-specific info: -- apt-config dump -- APT ""; APT::Architecture "i386"; APT::Build-Essential ""; APT::Build-Essential:: "build-essential"; APT::Cache-Limit "33554432"; Dir "/"; Dir::State "var/lib/apt/"; Dir::State::lists "lists/"; Dir::State::cdroms "cdroms.list"; Dir::State::userstatus "status.user"; Dir::State::status "/var/lib/dpkg/status"; Dir::Cache "var/cache/apt/"; Dir::Cache::archives "archives/"; Dir::Cache::srcpkgcache "srcpkgcache.bin"; Dir::Cache::pkgcache "pkgcache.bin"; Dir::Etc "etc/apt/"; Dir::Etc::sourcelist "sources.list"; Dir::Etc::vendorlist "vendors.list"; Dir::Etc::vendorparts "vendors.list.d"; Dir::Etc::main "apt.conf"; Dir::Etc::parts "apt.conf.d"; Dir::Etc::preferences "preferences"; Dir::Bin ""; Dir::Bin::methods "/usr/lib/apt/methods"; Dir::Bin::dpkg "/usr/bin/dpkg"; DPkg ""; DPkg::Pre-Install-Pkgs ""; DPkg::Pre-Install-Pkgs:: "/usr/sbin/dpkg-preconfigure --apt || true"; -- /etc/apt/preferences -- Package: * Pin: release a=stable Pin-Priority: 20 Package: * Pin: release a=testing Pin-Priority: 50 Package: * Pin: release a=unstable Pin-Priority: 500 -- /etc/apt/sources.list -- # Debian Unstable deb ftp://ftp.uni-heidelberg.de/pub/mirror.debian/ unstable main non-free contrib deb ftp://ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de/pub/Mirrors/ftp.debian.org/debian/ unstable main non-free contrib # Debian Testing deb ftp://ftp.uni-heidelberg.de/pub/mirror.debian/ testing main non-free contrib deb ftp://ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de/pub/Mirrors/ftp.debian.org/debian/ testing main non-free contrib # Debian stable deb ftp://ftp.uni-heidelberg.de/pub/mirror.debian/ stable main non-free contrib deb ftp://ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de/pub/Mirrors/ftp.debian.org/debian/ stable main non-free contrib deb-src ftp://ftp.uni-heidelberg.de/pub/mirror.debian/ unstable main non-free contrib deb-src ftp://ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de/pub/Mirrors/ftp.debian.org/debian/ unstable main non-free contrib # Debian Experimental deb ftp://ftp.uni-heidelberg.de/pub/mirror.debian/ experimental main non-free contrib deb ftp://ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de/pub/Mirrors/ftp.debian.org/debian/ experimental main non-free contrib # video-stuff deb ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ sarge main deb-src ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ sid main # Blackdown java #deb ftp://ftp.informatik.hu-berlin.de/pub/Java/Linux/debian/ sarge non-free # Bibus deb http://switch.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/bibus-biblio ./ deb-src http://switch.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/bibus-biblio ./ -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (50, 'testing'), (20, 'stable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.11-ck10-tc9 Locale: LANG=en_US, LC_CTYPE=en_US (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Versions of packages apt depends on: ii libc6 2.3.5-3 GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libgcc1 1:4.0.1-4 GCC support library ii libstdc++6 4.0.1-4 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 apt recommends no packages. -- no debconf information
