Package: apt
Version: 0.6.41
Severity: important

We are running Sid within a chroot environment and from time to time I
update the packages there. Since about apt-0.6.40 the 'apt-get update
command' causes problems. It just leaves zero byte files in
/var/lib/apt/lists/partial/, e.g.:

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 2005-08-28 10:43
ftp.nerim.net_debian-marillat_dists_sarge_main_binary-i386_Packages
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 2005-09-14 21:47
ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de_pub_Mirrors_ftp.debian.org_debian_dists_experimental_main_binary-i386_Packages
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 2005-09-14 21:47

ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de_pub_Mirrors_ftp.debian.org_debian_dists_stable_contrib_binary-i386_Packages

During the next 'apt-get update' I'm getting many messages like below,
and the package list won't be updated.

Hit ftp://ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de unstable/contrib Sources
99% [Packages bzip2 0] [Query] [Logging in]
bzip2: Compressed file ends unexpectedly;
perhaps it is corrupted? *Possible* reason follows.
bzip2: Inappropriate ioctl for device
Input file = (stdin), output file = (stdout)

It is possible that the compressed file(s) have become corrupted.
You can use the -tvv option to test integrity of such files.

You can use the `bzip2recover' program to attempt to recover
data from undamaged sections of corrupted files.

This bug can be very confusing as I first thought we are experiencing
filesystem or even memory errors - until I found out about the files in
/var/lib/apt/lists/partitial.

Thanks,
	Bernd

PS: Sorry that I reported not earlier, but my first bug report seems to
have been lost due to a mail-agent misconfiguration in the chroot.
