Bug#499555: aptitude safe-upgrade (and pretty much everything else) segfaults.

  Only if you can provide a reasonable way for aptitude to detect that
symbols inside apt have changed in an incompatible way.  I don't know
of any way to do that unless apt declares that an incompatible change
has been made (by, e.g., changing the SONAME).  And of course any such
technique will necessarily be incomplete.
