Bug#474947: MMap, again; and won't be denied this time
Package: apt
Version: 0.6.46.4-0.1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable, conventional workaround doesn't work
Well, it's everyone's favorite bug with apt-get:
Reading package lists... Error!
E: Dynamic MMap ran out of room
E: Error occurred while processing rt73-modules-2.6.24-1-xen-686 (NewVersion1)
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/debian.oregonstate.edu_debian_dists_testing_contrib_binary-i386_Packages
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
Turns out even worse, *no* setting for -o APT::Cache-File=200000000
causes this to go away. There is nothing I can do, aside from modifying
sources.list to make this go away. Since you asked,
/etc/apt/sources.list:
#########################################################################
#$Id: sources.list,v 1.8 2008/01/26 22:23:14 root Exp $ #
#########################################################################
# See sources.list(5) for more information, especialy
# Remember that you can only use http, ftp or file URIs
# CDROMs are managed through the apt-cdrom tool.

Commenting out testing (debian.oregonstate.edu is a mirror I prefer)
makes this go away. This should be *fixed*, don't just apply another
bandaid.
While entirely possible that this was just some momentary issue on one of
the mirrors (Tue Apr 8 05:47:21 UTC 2008), the fact that the
conventional workaround didn't work is very troubling; not quite as
troubling that there *is* a conventional workaround, but no small
problem.
