[X upgrade] may something happen between mawk is removed and gawk in installed ?

Hi,

Bug #314571 is about an old xserver-xfree86 upgrade. The submitter
wanted xserver-xfree86 to pre-depend on awk so that nothing happens
between mawk is removed and gawk in installed (he thinks xserver-xfree86
could be unpacked/configured in between, and thus fail).

We would rather not add a pre-depend unless we are sure it's required.
Could you guys have a look at this bug and tell us whether some problems
are actually possible with current apt ?
