I kind of figured this was not a direct aptitude bug, but I didn't know 
exactly where to file it, sorry.

The laptop managed to compile itself a kernel without crashing (this 
took *at least* 24 hours, since it has only 32MB RAM and *everything* is 
I/O bound because of the sloooow disk system).  Is that a sufficiently 
good memory test?
