Can this be explained by cating a binary file? That is possible.
It just happened again; ^C at the prompt and restarting the apt
command worked ("Return" was accepted); is this inconsistent with the
cat hypothesis? But I immediately ^C again, and my terminal was
apparently set to "noecho".
