The crash in the http method is strange because the code in there
didn't change from 0.6.43.3 to 0.6.44. A strace might be good, the
output of:
# apt-get update -o Debug::PkgAcquire=true 
as well. 

If it segfauls a gdb backtrace (if possible). Access to a sparc
machine might be good as well if the above does not give us a clue. 

Does it help if it is run with:
# apt-get update -o Acquire::PDiffs=true
[this should be false, but there is a bug in the current version so
the meaning is inverted, but that is already fixed in bzr]
