dist-upgrade apparently failed to remove obsolete packages from
Woody.

I tried to dist-upgrade from unstable to unstable, and got
a conflict between gnome-games-data and gnome-card-games. I
filed a bug against gnome-games-data, but that package's
maintainer replied that gnome-card-games is from Woody and
"upgrading from Woody is not supported". But I am running
unstable, not Woody, and have been running unstable for many,
many months.

This means that for the past couple of years or so, apt-get
dist-upgrade never realized that it should delete gnome-card-games
from my system.

As was pointed out before, apt only removes packages if you ask for
it. I'm sorry, but I'll close the bugreport on this ground. If you
disagree feel free to reopen it as a wishlist bug that apt-get
dist-upgrade should remove obsolete packages on dist-upgrades (if that
hasn't been reported already).

Various apt frontends (aptitude, synaptic) have a list of obsolete
packages that may be helpful as well.

Debian only supports upgrades from one release to the next. This means
that from woody you have to go to sarge first. If you upgraded from
woody directly to unstable problems like this may happen.

If there was never a conflict declared for any package on your system
with gnome-card-games this is expetected behavior.

Cheers,
 Michael
