Hello,
  is there some reason why Geller's patch in this bug report is 
still not applied, or objections against that patch reported in
the bugreport ?  Do I have to bump priority of this bug to critical
as it breaks unrelated package and causes data corruption ?

As of today there is another victim of apt's inability to handle
correctly data chunks beginning with '\r' : openclipart:
