I made a test with an installation from my WOODY r0 CD's and it works
fine. I upgrade to Kernel 2.4.27 (backports.org) and all is working.
Then, after upgrading to the current WOODY version I have this behaviour.
BUT (!!!) this Problem occurs only as $USER no as root AND (!!!) if I
run X. apt-cache eat up all resources in the XTerm and the console.
Shoting down the xserver all is working fine...
AFAIK I have this problem since WOODY r2.
(where I have upgraded the xserver)
I do not think, my sources.list is a problem:

OK, since r2 I have massiv memory problems with X and I was thinking
that this problem let apt-cache drive crazy...
Can you provide a Debug version of apt-cache ?
My current installation is a Duron 1600 with 384 MByte only fvwm2
without GNOME/KDE.
Greetings
