I haven't seen this before, or received any similar reports.  apt-cache
doesn't kill processes, though if _any_ process on your system consumed too
much memory, the kernel may kill processes using a lot of memory.

If you can provide a procedure by which I can reproduce your problem, I can
investigate, otherwise it does not seem like an apt problem.
