I am not a direct APT developer, but I would say that such a patch
would be considered, if it is well done. The reason is that I don't
think it's very intrusive on apt-get.

Anyway, please note that we are busy working on other parts of APT
(namely, archive signatures), so this will get low priority.

But submit a patch, unless others oppose.
