Bug#206187: apt-get update fails to get index package list and therefore does nothing

Does gunzip exist, and runs correctly?  How about running this command:

strace -ff -o /tmp/apt-get.log apt-get update

then tarring up all of /tmp/apt-get.log.*, gzipping it, and placing it online
somewhere?
