Reading Package Lists... Error!
E: Dynamic MMap ran out of room
E: Error occured while processing python2.2-xmlbase (NewVersion2)
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/dpkg/status
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

This seems to depend number packages gathered. After commenting
entries out from /etc/apt/sources.list this mmap error goes out
(not a workaround).

Plain memory should not be problem:

             total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached
Mem:       1028496    1006208      22288          0      16912     513552
-/+ buffers/cache:     475744     552752
Swap:      2097136          0    2097136

unless apt uses over 2.5GB memory.
