woe to my unstable laptop, which had not been updated in a whole 3-4
days, and did not have enough room in /var to do the upgrade. my
typical solution is to do some symlink hacks, but it would be nice if
apt could figure out how much space it had and would need and download
in portions (or maybe not by default but provide an option to do this)
