disappearing CD-ROM packages
Dear APT People,
here's an issue i hope will interest you.
background -
i am in the habit of backing up my whole linux systems by booting to a
rescue CD and TARing all files out to another disk and or partition. on
other releases (Mandrake mostly i suppose) this works well as the rescue CD
supports a full TAR command that does permission/ownership preservation.
NOW i'm on an ALPHA box with Debian3 (there is? nothing else) and i am
unsure of what the BusyBox TAR command on the install/rescue CD does with
permissions/ownership.
BUT i do the usual business and all seems well on restoration of the whole
system from the TArchive.
the ISSUE -
all seems well EXCEPT that the Package Manager GUI thingy shows ONLY
installed packages and none of the rest from the (7)CD install set. if i
delete the sources.list and "apt-cdrom add" all the CDs in the set the
Package Manager shows all packages again and is happy and so am i EXCEPT
i'd rather NOT have to feed all the CDs through after a system restore.
Do you have any ideas what is causing this??? i am NOT inclined to think it
is a permissions/ownership thing from the TArchive as if these were not
being handled properly the system would not even come close to coming back
in tact.
Can you indicate a particular file(s) i should be looking at??? can you
suggest any procedure/workaround???
thanks for reading this far and thanks for APT !
