I was still seeing the one problem I had reported earlier (corrupted
package index). I'll soon ship the product that uses apt-https - since
the repository there is very stable I'm not seeing the problem there.

But when I'm using apt-CVS from my work machine, where I'm running against
"testing" I was regulary hitting the problem, so I gave up.

If you (or whoever else is reading this email) are willing to help with
bughunting I can use apt-CVS on my machine again and we can find the bug.
I have already tried to find it on my own, but I'm not up to it.

Why not share the work? You're not making it extremely easy to
participate - f.ex.: is the apt mailing list still post only?

You could try to get other people involved.

IMHO if there are bugs and there's an active maintainer, then the bugs
will inevitably get squashed, even if the maintainer is not very
tallented. It's just a question of time/effort. An unreliable apt would
never get out of "unstable", so I think letting go control of apt a bit is
not such a drastic problem.

And since apt is quite high profile there's a chance that other people
might help.

And there's the i18n thing coming to you which will need a resolution of
some sort...

My opinion: if you want to give apt a chance to move forward - get other
people involved, maybe keep on watching the patches and act as a
patch-gatekeeper and keep on releasing apt so it gets tested and debugged.
