There seem to be a small typo in the error message of apt-ftparchive:

  E: Could not open file
    pool/dists/woody/$(SECTION/binary-i386/Packages.gz.new - open (2 No
    such file or directory)

I believe '$(SECTION/' should read '$(SECTION)/'.
