Package: wine
Version: 0.0.20010510-3

When trying to install wine using "apt-get install wine", the following
message is displayed:

***
spacesmurf:/home/jab# apt-get install wine
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

Sorry, but the following packages have unmet dependencies:
wine: Depends: libwine (= 0.0.20010510-3) but it is not going to be
installed
E: Sorry, broken packages
spacesmurf:/home/jab#
***

It works, however, if libwine is installed first (using "apt-get install
libwine").

My /etc/apt/sources.list looks like the following:
***
deb ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub/os/Linux/distributions/debian woody main
contrib non
deb ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub/os/Linux/distributions/debian-non-US
woody/non-US ma
***

wine depends on the following:
debconf
libwine (= 0.0.20010110-3)
xbase-clients (>= 4.0)
xcontrib

I have the following related packages installed:
debconf 0.9.70
xbase-clients is unpacked
xcontrib 3.3.3.1-0.1
libc6 2.2.3-5
dpkg 1.6.15
apt 0.3.19

uname -a reports the following:
  Linux spacesmurf 2.4.5 #5 Mon Jun 25 23:46:27 CEST 2001 i686 unknown

I may also have been a little short on disk space at the time, if that is
the problem then apt should say so and not recommend me to mail a bug
report.

Personally, I'd prefer if apt always would say why the package isn't going
to be installed, for example:
***
Sorry, but the following packages have unmet dependencies:
wine: Depends: libwine (= 0.0.20010510-3) but it is not going to be
installed due to lack of disk space.
***
instead of just 'but it is not going to be installed.'.

This is the usual operator error, the message is telling you that the
versions wine and libwine you have available can't be installed together.
Bad uploads, foobar mirrors, funny pins and hand recompiles are the usual
answers.
