Priority: critical

X-Debbugs-CC:

I recently attempted a dist-upgrade from potato to woody. The upgrade
failed, and left my system in a basically unusable state. Furthermore,
attempts to fix the problem also failed. I am about to attempt a fix with
some force option, which probably will recover things.

My system had bits of woody on it already, but was at XFree86 3.3. I think
the key problem appears in this snippet from the install log (which appears
in full at the end of this message):
Preparing to replace xbase-clients 3.3.6-11potato15 (using
.../xbase-clients_4.0.2-1_i386.deb) ...
Note: Removing obsolete /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit directory.
Unpacking replacement xbase-clients ...
D000400: does_replace ... found old, version 0:3.3.2.3a-9
dpkg: error processing /usr/var/apt/archives/xbase-clients_4.0.2-1_i386.deb
(--unpack):
trying to overwrite `/usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config', which is also in package
xserver-common
dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)

After this, I tried, for example
apt-get -f install
apt-get remove xbase-clients (and some other packages)
But these failed to run. X is broken. I can't run emacs in a console. I
can't send mail. It's pretty bad.

I think this is a bug in apt, because I think apt should not allow things
to get into such a state even if there is a problem with the underlying
packages.
I suspect this may be a bug in xfree because that's where the problem
lies. However, it may simply be that xf86config has simpled moved from one
package to another in the move from 3.3->4.0.

It's quite alright if you want to assign this to a more specific package or
downgrade the severity. On the former, the involvement of two packages
made general seem the best starting point. On the latter, the problems
which arose do fit the definition of critical.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
I had some of the debugging options for apt enabled. The rest of this
message is the (lengthy) log of the install:
