Sometimes during an apt-get dist-upgrade apt will want to remove
a package or put it on hold, and it can be very difficult to track
down exactly why (for instance, with packages with many deps). It'd
be nice to be able to query apt (perhaps through apt-cache) to see
what apt wants to do with a package and why.

This is the relm of an APT GUI, not the command line tools. I recommend
using apt-get install on the offending packages, that usually tells you
pretty exactly what it wants to do.
