Bug#68754: apt should show conflicts explicitly if requested
Package: apt
Version: 0.3.19
Severity: wishlist
I'm trying to install trn. But apt wants to remove leafnode.
At first, just saying "apt install trn" shows apt wants to install cnews
(and inews). Okay, cnews conflicting with leafnode makes sense.
Looking at trn's dependencies, I see it depends on inews|inewsinn.
So I try "apt-get install trn inewsinn".
cnews is now gone, but it still wants to remove leafnode.
Looking at leafnode, and at inewsinn, and at trn, and repeating the same a
couple times (:-) I still don't see a conflict.
Now I noticed Debug::pkgProblemResolver in some other bug report. And that
shows that apt-get still considers cnews... I guess therein lies the rub.
If it had some switch to make it show which conflicts cause it to want to
remove a package, that'd help. Lots.
Yeehaw!!! I just made it install trn w/o losing leafnode. I just installed
inewsinn separately ("apt-get install inewsinn") No conflict with leafnode.
When I now install trn, it sees the inews|inewsinn dependency satisfied.
Good. (I hope so... don't know whether trn will work with leafnode...)
Now... it feels like this is actually a bug. But feel free to upgrade...
Bye, J
