I've seen this happen to other people.  It can lead to very hard to track
down problems.  A local *bsd-ite made /home a symlink to /usr/home and
couldn't figure why running dselect kept making his $HOME readonly.

Maybe apt should be more liberal in what it accepts from its users and
provide an example apt.conf that by default has everything commented out.
That would also force people to think more before they do (which can't be
a bad thing.)
