From: "Richard E. Hawkins" <hawk@hawkins.cba.uni.edu>

Package: dselect
Version: 1.4.0.34 (i386 elf)

apt under dselect reports the wrong md5 sum when installing
tetex-nonfree. This creates a further problem when installing
textex-base, -bin , -nonfree, and -extra simultaneously, as -base and
-bin install correctly, -nonfree and -extra are not installed, and
dselect reports all four as installed successfully while "dpkg --list"
correctly reports only the first two. This gives a partially functioning
tex system which generates documents haveing no characters in therm.

ERROR http://http.us.debian.org/debian/dists/stable/non-free/binary-i386/tex/tetex-nonfree_0.9.981113-1.deb
  Incorrect MD5Sum

I really haven't the foggiest idea what to suggest to solve this.

This is not a problem with APT. You managed to get a corrupted download.
Newer APTs will automatically correct this when run again, but the old
version you are running requires a 'rm /var/cache/apt/archives/partial/*'
to remove the corrupted file.
