apt-get update segmentation fault

Hi

I have developed this problem.

apt 0.1.9 for i386 compiled on Nov  5 1998  17:50:04  

apt-get update
Get ftp://ftp.uwa.edu.au stable/contrib Packages
Get ftp://ftp.uwa.edu.au stable/main Packages
Get ftp://ftp.uwa.edu.au stable/non-free Packages
Fetched 584k in 0s (2410k/s)
Updating package file cache...done
Updating package status cache...done
Checking system integrity...ok
Segmentation fault

I have tried deleting the /var/cache/apt/*.bin files but no change.

df reports 160734 (1024-blocks) available on the /usr partition.


Any clues?
