apt-get appears to be getting rather enthusiastic about fiddling with
installed packages. I tried to run 'apt-get install liblocale-gettext-perl'
(that package was listed as held back in a previous 'apt-get upgrade'
invocation), and got the following:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
neptune:~# apt-get install liblocale-gettext-perl
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
The following extra packages will be installed:
  perl-5.004-base perl-5.004 perl-base perl-5.004-suid perl-5.004-doc
  perl-5.005-base fvwm-common xlogmaster
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  netscape-base-4 navigator-smotif-451 communicator-smotif-451 libmd5-perl
  apache-ssl w3mir apache-common communicator-spellchk-451 liburi-perl
  netscape-base-451 perl php3 freewrl debmake libhtml-parser-perl apache
  docbook-stylesheets autoconf netscape-smotif-451 procmail-lib dupload
  pilot-link cvsweb cbb communicator-base-451 perl-suid cons devscripts
  info2www communicator-nethelp-451 signify netscape-java-451 dpkg-dev

  libmime-base64-perl sgml-data perl-tk debsums kernel-package dbuild
  libwww-perl alien libgtk-imlib-perl docbook fvwmconf
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  perl-5.004-base perl-5.004 perl-5.004-suid perl-5.004-doc perl-5.005-base
4 packages upgraded, 5 newly installed, 50 to remove and 2 not upgraded.
Need to get 4810kB/5163kB of archives. After unpacking 49.2MB will be freed.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I can't see why these packages are even being considered here - there don't
appear to be any dependencies between them. Anyway, even if they are it
appears to be taking random - but consistent - potshots at my packages. I'd
quite like it if this wasn't the case :-)

Dependency versions:

ii libc6 2.1.1-12 GNU C Library: Shared libraries and [...]
ii libstdc++2.9-gl 2.91.66-2 The GNU stdc++ library (EGCS version)

$ uname -a
Linux neptune 2.2.1 #4 Mon Apr 19 15:08:23 BST 1999 i686 unknown

Cheers,
James
