Subject: apt-get http method hangs after connection timeout
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit

Package: apt
Version: 0.1.9

Debian: 2.1 using install fix www.debian.org/~adric/aic7xxx/
kernel: 2.0.36
libc: 2.0.7

While installing Debian 2.1, I got a hang in the deselect install phase.
I was happily loading packages from the internet using the apt method
(default config using http) when I got the following error message:

Get http://http.us.debian.org stable/main libpcre1 [30.8k]
 Connection timed out
65% [Err:libpcre1 `Waiting for file' 0/30.8k 0%]

I thought "fine, it will retry" and went off to lunch. On returning, it
hadn't done anything. ps revealed that the download process was just
sleeping:

PID TTY STAT TIME COMMAND
268 1 S 0:15 /usr/lib/apt/methods/http http://http.us...

The TIME wasn't changing, so it appears that it had hung. I killed the
process and deselect exited too, dropping me to the login prompt even
though I hadn't finished downloading all the packages.

I logged in, restarted dselect and successfully completed the package
download, but for a new user the hang is not very friendly. Maybe it was
supposed to do this (I couldn't find out at the time, since man wasn't
installed).

Regards,
Chris.
