   You are probably using the FTP method, there seems to be a glitch in the
   current version that causes this, http does not and ftp should not.

Yes, I use the ftp:// method.

   The messages are not at all important, I don't see any reason to pause.
    
I am interested  in the mean throughput  and in seeing what's happening.
Just  for    checking.     Maybe   an   option    somewhere?    In   the
/etc/apt/something file?

   Hm, if you want this then I would suggest running from the command line,
   apt-get -d dselect-upgrade
   
Ok,  thanks for the  tip.  However, I guess I'm   not the only one which
would benefit from a  behaviour similar to  that of  the ftp  method.  I
suppose that downloading while doing other work  and then looking at the
installation phase is a common requirement.
