Actually it's a vte thing, not xfce4-terminal.

What are you calling the clipboard here? The ?middle clic? selection was
already available before and is still available now.

Well afaict that's the same thing for everything, unrelated to terminal or vte
or that option. What you need then in a clipboard manager (like xfce4-
clipboard) to retain the clipboard content.

I guess it actually gets selected and thus copied to the clipboard.

You can still use it.
